Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell in unity

Psalm 133:1

A gentle breeze blowing through the trees, crickets chirping in a lush green meadow, the lapping of water on the shores of a lake, or the strings of a symphony blending beautifully.  When you think of harmony, what comes to mind?  The words that meld into the Biblical word harmony include unity, love, peace, and humility.  God’s Word tells us to live in harmony with one another, have sympathy and brotherly love toward one another, and this comes from having a tender heart and a humble mind (Romans 12:16; 1 Peter 3:8).  Sometimes this principle seems easier said than done when dealing with various people and circumstances.  But we must remember that God outlines these principles in His Word for our own good, growth, and protection.  God’s Word tells us, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity” (Psalm 133:1).  He is consistently trying to grow us up in godliness, for our edification and His glory.  Through harmony with others, He is offering protection from the fiery darts of the enemy.  The enemy cannot win the battle he wages against us when we maintain living in harmony.  When we read Colossians 3:12-15, the passage is such a glorious reflection of God telling us that as we forgive others, and put on love, those two acts will bind everything together in perfect harmony.

Prayer

Gracious Father, your Word reveals such truth to my heart when you remind me to demonstrate your perfect harmony with others, and that you will even grant me the peace of Christ ruling in my heart when I do so.  You nurture me with such gentleness, and take your Shepherd’s rod to lead me beside still waters (Psalm 23:2). You are my perfect example of harmony!  Your act of love and forgiveness toward me, by humbling and sacrificing your Son on the cross for my salvation, encompasses the eternal harmony that I now have with you in Jesus Christ.  Remind me to aim for restoration, to be a vessel of comfort to others, and to live at peace and harmony with those you bring along my path (2 Corinthians 13:11).

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
