The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.
Proverbs 15:33
We don’t hear much about honor any more in our culture, as self-centeredness is perpetually encouraged. But when we show honor to someone, we are displaying that we esteem and value them through our words and actions. This may be especially hard when we are called to submit to someone we don’t agree with or can’t quite grasp the reason they are doing something. We are to be devoted to one another in love, and honor one another above ourselves (Romans 12:10). When we lightly esteem God, it may come across as being impatient with His timing, or complaining when He places us under someone’s authority that we clash with. Wisdom calls us to fear or show reverence to the Lord, and with that act of humility he will show honor to us (1 Samuel 2:30). Just as we honor people through seeking peace and unity, serving, respecting, and giving them our time and attention, God desires that we always place Him in a position of honor, elevating Him far above all else. When we humble ourselves before God, he will lift us up (1 Peter 5:6). What an encouragement that is!
Prayer
Loving Father, remind me that to you, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever! (Revelation 5:13). Let that be my heart’s song to you, in reverence and humility, asking that the Holy Spirit prompt me to remove any self-centered wants and clothe me with concern for others’ wellbeing over my own. Lord, quicken my thoughts and actions towards others you have brought into my life to treat them with honor and respect. May I be a blessing to others and bring you glory!
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
